This is the first wash of my drawing of a snake. This little guy was found in our yard last spring, on a warm day in April or May. Our dog Jackie 'found' the snake. Lucky for Snakey I saw her pawing the ground in front of it, and got her into the house before she did any harm. The dogs pounce like foxes when they are preying on any critter other than a snake. With snakes they paw, and eventually kill. I didn't want that. So after Jackie was safely away, I took pictures. He was rather traumatized, so he was a great STILL subject. And not more that about 14-16 inches long, and not big around. I wasn't scared of him, in other words! I have some very good pictures.

I started working on the patterning on the snake's body, after I was satisfied with the base colors. In the pictures, he was rather blue-black, with the splashes of orange. His head appeared somewhat greenish, and his eyes were blue! Maybe not this bright, but I liked it, even if it isn't totally accurate.

Looks as if he is a happy soul.
Now Midge, how do you really feel about snakes? These little guys are OK. The big ones, that's another thing all together.
Yes, you did an excellent job of giving the snake the illusion of having its head off the ground. It was an automatic assumption until you pointed it out, and I realized that I had naturally already assumed that! :) Lovely job.
By the way, thank you for all of the advice on my blog. Coming from a former teacher helps to center my mommy spazzy-ness (no that's not a word, so don't harass me Don *wink*).
