The Fish Ladder

Last weekend Michele and I visited the fish ladder on the Sixth Stree dam, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  It was built 25-30 years ago, to help migrating salmon get past the dam.

The fish ladder is to the left in this picture.  You can see that the dam, which causes fish to congregate, is popular with fishermen.

This picture was taken just inside the ladder, where there is a calm backwater, before the flowing steps.  The fish are carp...not desirable to the current fishing crowd.  They (the fisherpeople) might want to read the Mother Earth News article I noted a few days ago, about hunting, cleaning and enjoying carp as a menu item.

Something else interesting happened at the dam. Two Indian (as in from-India) gentlemen walked down the path toward the river as we left.  One wore waders cinched around his armpits and carried a long fish pole with a dangling bait that hooked on a bush and gave him a start.  Michele gave him a friendly 'thumbs up' and he laughed, adding that he thought he had a strike.  It reminded me that all of us in America have something in common:  we are all immigrants.  We are also all humans, and should laugh together more.

The story about the Indian gentlemen reminds of how I feel every time I see a fellow mom. No matter what language we speak it is clear we can all relate to a mom's greatest hope: MORE SLEEP!

Tiff, you are right about Moms and sleep. We men aren't strong enough to be moms. You women have powers we boys can only wonder at. More power (and admiration) to you.
