Sometimes kids say things that amaze us. Sometimes they say things that stun us. Most of the time they say things that make us want to laugh.
Yesterday Michaela, Carrie and I were playing a slot machine. No, I didn’t take my kids to the casino. We have a toy slot machine that I picked up years ago on a trip to Las Vegas. We found it while getting Halloween decorations out of the basement. It’s just a little one that doubles as a bank. Put your money in one slot and it goes into the bank. Put it into another slot, and it goes into a holding area until someone wins at the slots. The machine does take batteries, and it chimes and has a flashing light if you win. To win you have to line up all 7’s, BARS, or any combination of them. The other symbols are all fruits or some such. No other numbers. This is important in a moment.
Carrie is still learning her numbers and letters. She knows them pretty well, but still misses a few occasionally. She usually corrects herself and gets it right on the second try. The ones she does miss are the usual: 6 for 9, Y for V, U for V, and a few others that are similar looking.
Michaela was having fun playing with the slot machine and Carrie was telling me about how she won earlier.
“I know how you win Daddy! You get 6-6-6.” Carrie said with a big smile.
“Um, what?”
“You need 6-6-6 to win.” She repeated, oblivious to what the numbers meant.
“Are you sure?” I asked. Michaela was getting ready to chime in with the correct answer.
“I mean 7-7-7.” Carrie said, still smiling, as the slot machine chimed and flashed. Michaela had won.
I looked at Carrie smiling and wondered to myself what could be read into an innocent little girl saying you need the sign of the devil to win at gambling…
