A few days ago Michaela’s Monarch butterfly hatched! The chrysalis had started to darken last Friday. Saturday it had already hatched by the time we checked it in the morning! We planned on letting it go Sunday, but it had been raining nearly nonstop all weekend. It was mostly from remnants of the hurricanes. The weather people are predicting it will be dry for the rest of the week. Hopefully it will be dry enough to let the monarch go soon.
We have one chrysalis left. This is the one the girls found outside on the daisies. It should hatch in about a week or so, maybe even later this week. The nights are supposed to start getting pretty cold, and I’m not sure how this will affect the metamorphosis (if it is affected at all).
In other news, the eggs or droppings or whatever-they-were disappeared from the window screen. We checked over the weekend and they were gone. There wasn’t any sign of them having ever been there. I wonder if something ate them. If whatever it was did hatch into some bugs, we couldn’t find any sign of them.
And finally: Lily did NOT sleep through the night over the weekend. Saturday night she decided it would be fun to wake up every 10 minutes or so for about an hour. She did this twice. The humidity in the air didn’t help either. It was so humid that our doors were swelling. Her door swells the worst. It was almost to the point you couldn’t close it but had to leave the door open slightly. If you did manage to close it, opening it became the next problem. When you went to open the door it sounded like you were ripping the veneer off one side while kicking on the other. Not the quietest sound in the world when you are going in to comfort an already crying baby.
I’ll keep an eye on that Monarch chrysalis and maybe we can get some pictures of this last one right as it emerges.
