It must have been the spicy tomato juice. I seldom get the hiccups (unless I am eating hot & sour Chinese soup, and then I get them constantly), so I was both surprised and annoyed when they started as I was preparing for bed.
They lasted through flossing my teeth, and brushing my teeth, and gargling. I held my breath in the shower, but they persisted. I tried shallow breathing while I toweled off. No good. Then they followed me to bed.
Sleep and I are good buds. We get along just fine...normally. Again I tried holding my breath, then breathing shallowly, and again the next hiccup came, and the next, and the...DANG! Sleep stood across the room, tapping its foggy foot while it waited for me to be cooperative.
'What causes hiccups?' I wondered. Is it a spasm of the diaphragm? That seemed to be where they were coming from. Hmm.
I held my breath and folded my shoulders forward, then pulled them back as far as I could. Back and forth, forward and backward, about one cycle per second. I did this continually and held my breath through an interval that should have included a hiccup. No hiccup. I slowly let out my breath and continued the shoulder flexing through another interval. Again, nothing. I had conquered the hiccups. I am not kidding.
Why did it work? I don't know. Maybe I influenced my diaphragm. Was it coincidence? Absolutely not. No, for sure it wasn't coincidence.
I lay cautiously, quietly, tentatively.
"You okay?" Sleep asked.
"I believe I am," I answered. "Shall we go away together?"
And we did.
